A new method for assessing the hygienic condition of third molars in dental patients

ABSTRACT
The aim of the study. Тo develop a new way to assess the hygienic condition of the third molars in dental patients based on previously known hygienic indices of the oral cavity and demonstrate its informativeness.
Objects and methods.  The study included theoretical and practical parts. The first was to analyze the specialized literature on the assessment of oral hygiene and, in particular, the hygienic status of the third molars. The clinical part involved 26 people aged 18-32 years who underwent an examination that included: external examination; oral cavity examination with the determination of the oral hygiene index O-HIS and an index assessment of the oral hygiene level of young people performed by calculation and the hygiene index of the third molars (HITM).
Results and discussion. The new HITM incorporates all the most valuable characteristics of the OHI-S index, as well as an index assessment of the level of oral hygiene of young people, performed by calculation, while having a number of advantages, namely: it has no age restrictions; it allows you to get a reliable result even if there is only one third molar in the oral cavity, and subject to its partial eruption; has sufficiently clear numerical criteria for distinguishing between different levels of the hygienic condition of the third molars; It contains elements of guidance for a specialist doctor when deciding on the organization of a therapeutic and preventive complex for each individual patient, after determining the level of hygienic condition of the third molars.
Conclusion.  The results obtained give reason to conclude that the proposed HITM not only makes it possible to carry out a preventive examination in preparation for oral surgery, but can also be used for dynamic monitoring of patients.
