ABSTRACT
Currently, the category of patients with a history of COVID-19 infection is of particular interest to dentists.
The aim of the study. To provide a clinical and labora-tory justification for differentiated treatment of patients with generalized periodontitis and previous COVID-19 infection.
Objects and methods. The study involved 141 patients. The patients were divided into 3 groups. The main group consisted of 60 practically healthy patients who had also previously undergone periodontal treatment for the diagnosis of “chronic generalized periodontitis of moderate severity” and subsequently suffered from COVID-19 infection. Then the patients of the main group were divided into 2 subgroups (30 people in each). The patients of the first subgroup were given a new method of combined treatment of periodontal diseases using the herbal medicine “MacLei Leaves” and vacuum therapy.
Results and discussion. According to the results of the study, the values of the GI, PMA, PI, and IPC indices in the main group were 1.9, 5.2, 2.2, and 8 times worse than in the comparison group (p < 0.05). The biochemical test for express diagnostics of periodontitis gave the following results: in 57 patients of the main group (95 %) the test was positive, while in the comparison group the test was positive only in 5 patients (7.3 %), and in the group of healthy individuals the test was negative in all patients. The values of the GI, PMA, PI, and IPC indices 3 months after treatment in patients of subgroup 1 decreased by 2.2, 4.7, 1.6, and 8 times, respectively; the prevalence of positive express test results over 3 months of observation decreased from 96.7 % to 6.7 %.
Conclusion. A new method of combined treatment us-ing the drug “MacLei leaves” and vacuum therapy is effective in the treatment of patients with generalized periodontitis and previous COVID-19 infection.
