Peculiarities of the prosthodontic treatment of the patient with hypoglossal nerve damage

ABSTRACT
The aim of the study. To demonstrate by the example of the clinical case the peculiarities of the prosthodontic treatment of the patients with hypoglossal nerve damage.
Objects and methods. During the patient’s treatment standard materials were used, required for the treatment of complete edentulism by implant-supported overdentures, lower facial third analysis was conducted using teleradiography, the treatment peculiarities of the patient who suffered from poliomyelitis in childhood that caused the damage of the 12th pare of cranial nerves with bilateral tongue paralyses, orbicularis oris muscle paralysis, partial facial muscles paresis are highlighted.
Results and discussion. On the example of a clinical case, the features of orthopedic treatment of patients with lesions of the hypoglossal nerve and the consequences of surgical interventions on soft tissues were considered: the impossibility of performing speech tests, the peculiarities of the design of the edges when taking an impression, the difficulty of inserting and removing prostheses due to postoperative cicatricial changes in the vestibule of the oral cavity.
Conclusion. In comparison with traditional ways of treatment of patients with full edentulism the usage of implant-supported overdentures allows to significantly improve masticatory performance and to increase the quality of patient’s life, and to decrease the level of depression and anxiety after the treatment. In some specifically complicated cases, such as the damage of the 12th pare of cranial nerves and postoperative cicatricial
tissue changes.
