ABSTRACT
To date, the issue of prevention and treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region is one of the leading unresolved problems among dental diseases. Increasingly, there is an atypical clinical course of these diseases. There is a need for further study of the etiology and pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region.
The aim of the study. To study the degree of destruction of the matrix of S. aureus biofilms by blood neutrophils of patients with infectious and inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region.
Objects and methods. 80 patients (38 (47.5%) women and 42 (52.5%) men) with infectious inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region were examined; they all were on inpatient treatment in the dental purulent department. To assess the effect of neutrophils on biofilms of microorganisms-pathogens of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region, a special method was developed to determine the degree of destruction of the matrix of S. aureus biofilms.
Results and discussion. Statistical analysis data demonstrate an increase in the amount of Congo red S. aureus biofilm released from the matrix, which indicates an increase in neutrophil activity in the presence of a bacterial agent in the form of biofilms of microorganisms-causative agents of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region. “Acute purulent odontogenic periostitis of the jaw” and “acute odontogenic osteomyelitis of the jaw” there were no statistically significant differences in the studied parameter on the day of admission and on the 3rd day of treatment.
Conclusion. Neutrophils in the blood of patients are able to efficiently degrade the biofilm matrix produced by S. aureus. This activity of neutrophils was the highest in the group of patients diagnosed with acute purulent odontogenic periostitis of the jaw.
