The use of dental intraoral devices for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

ABSTRACT
The aim of the study is improving the methods of functional diagnostics of dentition by analyzing the biopotentials of muscles and assessing their coordinated activity.
Objects and research methods. For a unified comprehensive assessment of functioning of the muscles of the maxillofacial region during chewing, L.S. Persin proposed a formula for calculating the muscle coordination coefficient based on the biopotentials (in μV) of the muscles of synergists and antagonists. A method of functional diagnostics of the dentoalveolar system is proposed by analyzing the biopotentials of muscles and assessing their coordinated activity using the proposed new calculation formula. Using the EMGprogJ computer program, based on the BKN16 electromyograph (Bioket, Italy), the activity and rest coefficient of the muscle under the study was calculated, the value of its BP was determined, and the coordination coefficient for the chewing period was also calculated.
Results and discussion. When calculating the coordination coefficient of muscles of the maxillofacial area in the phase of chewing movement according to EMG indicators, using the formula of L.S. Persin (without taking into account the BP GCSm indicators), the absence of discoordination in the work of the muscles was determined (the coefficient is normal). Calculating the coordination coefficient of the muscles of the maxillofacial area and the sternocleidomastoid muscles in the phase of the chewing movement according to the proposed formula, discoordination in the work of the muscles was established.
Conclusion. The presented clinical case testifies the need to modernize the formula for the muscle coordination coefficient of L.S. Persin with the addition of PD indicators of the sternocleidomastoid muscles. It is recommended to calculate the coefficient of coordination of the muscles of the maxillofacial area and neck in the phase of the chewing movement according to the proposed formula. The proposed program EMGprogJ will improve the efficiency, accuracy and information content of diagnostics of the functional state of the dentition, as well as automatically calculates the muscle coordination coefficient in the phase of chewing movement.
