ABSTRACT
Lip diseases are a common pathology caused by numerous causative factors. The most common disease is cheilitis – inflammation of the red border, mucous membrane and skin of the lip (perioral area of the skin), which can be a consequence of either direct exposure to local damaging factors (exposure to wind, cold or sunlight), or a reflection of systemic disorders and diseases of the patient (for example, herpetic infection, oral lichen planus, systemic lupus erythematosus, erythema multiforme, vitamin imbalance, minerals and others). In accordance with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10, 1997), diseases of the lips belong to class XI Diseases of the digestive system (K00-K93) and include various forms of cheilitis, biting the cheeks and lips and other specified/unspecified diseases of the lips. On the lips there are various groups of clinical and morphological elements of the lesion, which, as a rule, do not have specific, pathognomonic signs, and many forms of cheilitis can be characterized by a persistent recurrent course, are difficult to treat and represent not only a medical, but also a social problem, since they adversely affect the patient’s communication with colleagues and family. For the timely detection of diseases that appear on the lips, the dentist and other medical specialists must be alert, which will contribute to the early detection of this pathology and reduce the severity of the disease.
