ABSTRACT
The aim is to study the effect of TiO2 on blood leukocytes in patients with periimplantitis.
Objects and methods. Patients with dental implants and periimplantitis (n = 23) and without periimplantitis (n = 20) were examined. The control group consisted of 22 patients without dental implants.
Results and discussion. TiO2 has an immunomodulatory effect on leukocytes of patients with periimplantitis, as indicated by a direct strong correlation (R=0,76; p<0,05) between the results of detection of hypersensitivity to TiO2, determined in the reaction of allergen-induced leukocyte injury and the metabolic activity of neutrophils, determined in the NBT-test. In the reaction of allergen induced leukocyte injury, sensitization to TiO2 was revealed in 12 (52%) patients with periimplantitis, in 6 (30%) patients with dental implants without periimplantitis and in 2 (9%) patients of the control group. The most strongly TiO2 increased the metabolic activity of neutrophils in patients with periimplantitis – 35% [27; 41] (p < 0,05), to a lesser extent – in patients with dental implants without periimplantitis – 27% [15; 30], but stronger (p < 0,05) than in control patients (16% [11; 27]) (p < 0,05). The metabolic activity of neutrophils in patients was associated with the terms of use of dental implants: in the group with peiimplantitis – R = 0.88; p < 0,05, in the group with dental implants without periimplantitis – R = 0,77; p < 0,05.
Conclusions. The data obtained indicate that the relationship between the development of periimplantitis and activation of leukocytes under the influence of the TiO2. Therefore, prior to installation of dental implants patients are necessary to test for detection of hypersensitivity to TiO2.
